What Is Gut Health & Why Is It Important?

August 22, 2024

Your gut does more than just digest food—it plays a crucial role in your overall health and well-being. From supporting your immune system to communicating with your brain, your gut is at the center of many essential bodily functions. With the growing recognition of its importance, maintaining gut health has become more critical than ever. In this blog, we’ll explore why gut health matters, how toxins can disrupt this delicate balance, and how our comprehensive 16-week Gut Health Program at Feed Your Soul Fitness can help you detoxify, reset, and thrive through a targeted gut health cleanse.

What Is Gut Health & Why Is It Important?

Gut health, or gastrointestinal (GI) health, is important for overall health and well-being. The gut is responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It also contains our gut microbiome which contains trillions of microbes that produce hormones and vitamins. 80% of our immune system lies in the gut and when it is healthy it supports the immune system, nervous system, and helps the body communicate with the brain. There is more communication from the gut to the brain than the brain to the gut. The gastrointestinal system is now being recognized as its own bodily system because of the discovery of just how much this system does to support our overall health, as well as all the communication to the body that comes from it.

How To Detox Your Gut

Purification, also known as detoxification, can help your body to remove toxins. We are exposed to external toxins (air and water pollutants, cigarette smoke, chemicals in cleaning products and beauty products, pesticides, and preservatives and additives) daily. Your body is designed to expel these toxins naturally, but over time, and with chronic exposure, systems can become overburdened. Purification will provide your body with additional support to expel and metabolize these toxins which are important for overall health and vitality. Toxin overload can contribute to a wide range of symptoms which include brain fog, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, indigestion, occasional GI upset (full feeling after a meal, bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation), food cravings, weight gain, inability to lose weight, low libido, and dull skin.

Introducing Our 16-Week Gut Health Program

We offer a comprehensive 16-week Gut Health Program at Feed Your Soul Fitness to help people with this exact thing. It is broken down into 4 parts for the 16 weeks:

Part 1 is “Ramp Down”

Part 2 is “Purification”

Part 3 is “Food Reintroduction”

Part 4 is “Creating the New Normal/Macros/Portion Focus”

The 4 Components Of Our Gut Health Program

We specifically include these four critical components because the majority of “detox diets”, “cleanses” or “elimination diets” don’t provide them. That is harmful and not helpful to the individual in many ways. We’ll explain how it works and why each “part” is there below:

Ramp Down-Clients will take approximately 1 week to ramp down or taper off and eventually temporarily eliminate caffeine, processed food, alcohol, sugar, tobacco, soy, dairy, eggs, grains, and nuts from their diet. We guide this period of time as it can be harder for some individuals to reduce or temporarily eliminate these if they tend to incorporate them into their daily or weekly diet. We want to ensure the individual doesn’t go “cold turkey” from this reduction/elimination period and have difficult side effects like nausea, headaches, body pain or GI issues.

Purification-This phase makes up 21 days of this program. During these 21 days, clients will eat a specific diet that is packed with nutrients to support detoxification. They will also drink specific protein shakes and take supplements to provide the body with additional support during this time. During this period, the individual is encouraged to eat as many vegetables as possible, balance fruit intake, and drink plenty of water. During this phase, chicken and fish are integrated back in slowly to overall increase protein intake.

Food Reintroduction-During this period of time, which can be 4-8 weeks, dairy, eggs, grains, and nuts will be reintroduced specifically and individually. As we reintroduce certain foods, reactions will be explored and discussed to help determine what the next steps are. We have seen people express that they cannot tolerate certain items but through our thorough process, we actually discover that often it’s when multiple food choices are combined either in one sitting or throughout one day. This type of individual approach and specific reintroduction can allow the person to make these discoveries, then leading to a broader intake of a variety of food without severe reactions. Caffeine as well as other items that were eliminated may possibly be reintroduced as well depending on the individual.

New Normal/Macros/Portion Sizes-After food reactions have been explored, a personalized new ‘normal diet’ will be created for the client keeping these potential food allergies, sensitivities, and reactions in mind. Clients will receive coaching on how to implement this new diet into their everyday lives. Clients will also receive coaching on macros (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) and receive their personal macro goals and calorie goals to also incorporate into their new normal diet. We want to ensure they are eating the appropriate amount of food each day that provides a balance in vitamins and nutrients for optimal health and vitality.

Once the 16 weeks comes to a close, we find that our clients have more confidence in foods as well as a better relationship with food in general. Gut health is extremely important for overall health and vitality.

Our 16-week gut health program will provide your body with the support it needs to naturally detoxify your system, reset, and discover any potential food allergies or sensitivities that you may be struggling with. The program can also help someone that may be struggling with fatigue, brain fog, chronic illness, sleep disturbances, and a weakened immune system.
